A Health Teacher Instructs Her Pupils About The Importance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the best known co-educational high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only four years, she had already established a reputation as a person with instructional approaches that encouraged and inspired students to think and to learn.

As an illustration, one Tuesday morning at 8:30 she addressed her pupils and articulated the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general viewpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most highly researched signs of alcoholism from a less general and explicit standpoint."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will positively demonstrate that a drinker with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the greater the probability that he or she is an alcohol addicted person."

Miss Jackson then told the class members that each person would be responsible for researching three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other members in the class by way of a eight minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top seven alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After roughly ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the pupils in her class that after she reviews the numbers, she will discuss her findings the morning of the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the students in her class to look over the data on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost every pupil in the class raised her or his hand. It was obvious that the students had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism authorities. For instance, virtually every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, to be precise, "Do you feel awfully ill when you quit drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her class why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol dependency. She stressed the fact that the principal difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

Fundamentally this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol abruptly quits drinking, she or he will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the person who is alcohol dependent, the students started to grasp the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement displayed by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and motivated the students in her class to stop and think about a significant social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
