Frank and Linda have been in a dating relationship for six-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same Russian history class at a medium size, country, private liberal arts college located in the Midwestern part of the United States. While they were just good friends at first, they eventually started to date when they were in their first year of college.Due to the fact both of them came from very "old school" backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first started to date. As the time proceeded, nevertheless, they began to go to more happy hours, sorority and fraternity parties, keg parties, and football bashes. As a result, they slowly but surely began to drink increasingly more the longer they dated.
After they graduated, they both found employment in a relatively small city located about fifty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move in with each other.
With any big change in a person's life there is commonly something that initiates the particular transformation in question. For Linda and Frank the thought of having children and buying a new house was this "change agent." In brief, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to critically evaluate their abusive and irresponsible drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their health. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their irresponsible drinking.
Would their abusive and excessive drinking unfavorably affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending so much money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?
From a different line of reasoning, even though neither one of them ever experienced alcohol poisoning, received a DWI, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their heavy drinking was becoming a problem that they could not discount any longer. All of these questions clearly indicated the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to grasp the fact that they couldn't continue their heavy drinking if their dreams, goals, and aspirations were to be accomplished.
Once they got to this conclusion, they informed their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their goal of buying or building a new house, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to pal around with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this point forward so that they could start realizing their future aspirations, goals, and dreams.
Much to their disbelief, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reexamining their lives and concluded that their life-styles were too focused on drinking. They also believed that they would have to change drastically if they were to become more responsible and show more consideration for their aspirations, their health, and for their careers in the next five or ten years.
After their heart-to-heart discussion with their pals about their dreams, hopes, and plans, Linda and Frank basically started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their friends. The key reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar attitude regarding their excessive drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, goals, and plans.
