When I was just a child I can tenderly hark back to sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and watching my father getting a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is in the present day. There was an art to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was apparent that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gentlemen could hang out amongst themselves.The haircuts were at all times so precise. My dad would be sitting in one of the many used barber chairs while the barber would purposely take his time to provide the flawless cut. Nearly all men kept their hair short as that was the way back then. Following the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we see today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight blade razor was chosen. It looks intimidating, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so enjoyable.
The men would principally argue about baseball or local politics, though the subject of women would come up a great deal. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a little better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly attempt to get out as soon as possible.
As I saunter by the local barber shop and spot the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this custom has mostly disappeared from our society. Do people not value a proper hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time being friendly with our friends and neighbors seems like a difficult task? While I am not one to be cynical and only long for for "how things were", I do wish that people will recall and value the way it was just a few years ago.
